Help the Homeless This Weekend

If you're looking for something to do on Saturday (November 21), it's not too late to take part in the 22nd Annual Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon.

This community-wide program raises funds and awareness that help support organizations in our region working to prevent and end homelessness. According to the programs Web site, "More than 12,000 people in the Washington metropolitan area do not have homes a number that is expected to grow under current economic conditions. This includes people living on the streets, staying in shelters or living in transitional housing.

"There are many misconceptions about homelessness. Fewer than 11 percent regularly live on the streets. More than 40 percent of homeless people are families and about one in four are children. Nearly one-third of homeless people are employed."

Since 1988, the Help the Homeless Program has raised more than $75 million for nonprofits serving the homeless in our region. 100% of your donation through the program goes directly to the Help the Homeless nonprofit beneficiary nonprofits.

Center for Nonprofit Advancement Member beneficiary groups include:

Sign the Petition to Save Our Safety Net

Today and tomorrow, the District of Columbia City Council will make decisions on the Mayor's proposed budget cuts to address the District’s revenue shortfalls.

Reach out — TODAY — to your staff, board, clients, colleagues and friends. Encourage them to speak out against cuts to DC’s safety net — cuts that could be made THIS WEEK — by visiting a new Web site that makes it easy to communicate directly with the DC Council.

Today, City Council will begin deliberation on the budget. Under Mayor Fenty's current proposal, over half of the cuts fall on human services.

It's time to save our safety net. It's not too late to try and change course!

The Coalition for Community Investment has developed a website with a petition calling on Councilmembers to save our safety net. Please help us spread the word about this petition so we can show widespread community support for protecting critical safety net services.

Here's the Web site: www.SaveOurSafetyNet.com

Here's who to tell:
  • Your professional network
  • Your social circle
  • Your organization's action alert network
  • Blog about it, tweet about it, post it to Facebook

How to Lead a Charismatic Organization

Wouldn't you like to make your nonprofit more charismatic in these tough economic times?

Join the Center for Nonprofit Advancement and the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington on Tuesday, April 28 for a discussion with Shirley Sagawa, founding Managing Director of the Corporation for National and Community Service, about the concepts in her new book, The Charismatic Organization.

Not every charismatic leader runs a successful organization, and not every successful organization has a charismatic leader. Rather, nonprofit boards and staff through careful design and active outreach can build an organization that is both effective and enduring. They can do so by investing the non-profit with crucial qualities we see in all highly charismatic nonprofits and by using proven methods that have succeeded in all types of organizations.

Event details:
When: Tuesday, April 28, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Where: Carnegie Endowment, 1779 Massachusetts Ave, NW Washington, DC
